The PlayStation 5 has been out for some time now, and its reception has been mostly positive. It includes lots of quality-of-life improvements over its predecessor, the PlayStation 4, such as faster load times, a solid-state drive (SSD) instead of a regular hard disk drive (HDD), and an improved controller thanks to the new DualSense. Having said all that, a console is only as good as the games available on it, and thankfully, the PS5 has you covered on that front as well.
While the machine already has a worthy library of great PS5 games, there are even more to look forward to, with some releasing as soon as this month while others are years away. In the video game world, it’s not uncommon to be aware of games that are still several years off, while it’s also normal for a new game to be revealed and launched within just a couple of months. In this comprehensive list, we’ll go through the major PS5 releases from 2022, leading up to 2023 and even beyond.
These are the best upcoming PS5 games to look forward to.
During the PS5’s reveal event, we got a tease for the sequel to 2018’s God of War. Now officially titled God of War: Ragnarok, we know it’ll be coming out in 2022, as revealed during the September 2021 PlayStation Showcase. While there still are a slew of questions about Ragnarok, we do know it’ll feature Freya and Thor as antagonists, along with an older Atreus. The 2021 trailer for this game showed off some gameplay, along with some imagery of new locales. Sony is gearing up for this game’s launch later this fall, and it’s easily one of the biggest releases of the year.
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum was one of the first games confirmed for a PS5 release. In development at German studio Daedalic Entertainment, the game occurs before the events of the titular books and will focus on Gollum and the ongoing conflict in his head. It will be an action-adventure game with stealth elements, and Gollum won’t look like he does in the Peter Jackson movies. It also won’t be going for a hyper-realistic art style, unlike the recent Mordor games from Warner Bros. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum has been delayed multiple times to ensure it meets expectations. It’s now set to launch sometime in early 2023
Over five after the initial announcement, Skull and Bones is finally launching in March 2023, after being delayed out of 2022. The final version of Skull and Bones is a mix of Ubisoft’s open-world titles, survival games, and a more detailed version of the Assassin’s Creed series’ naval combat. Are players still interested after the title has seen so many delays? And will it stack up against the success of Sea of Thieves?
Kicking off the 2021 PlayStation Showcase was the announcement of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake. It’s still very early in development and will likely be a while before it’s ready to launch. The original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic launched for Xbox in 2003 and was developed by BioWare, the team behind Mass Effect and Dragon Age. The remake is being handled by Aspyr, the studio that developed remasters of Star Wars: Episode I — Racer, Star Wars: Jedi Knight — Jedi Academy, and Star Wars: Republic Commando. Interestingly, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake will be a PS5 timed console exclusive, though it’s unclear for how long. In 2022, it was reportedly delayed indefinitely, so we likely won’t get to play this game any time soon.
Untitled Ubisoft Star Wars game
Now that EA’s exclusive Star Wars deal has expired, other companies — such as Ubisoft — are free to work on games within the beloved franchise. We know Ubisoft Massive is now developing an open-world Star Wars game under the Lucasfilm Games umbrella. This will be the first Star Wars game published by a company other than EA since 2013. It’s unknown when it’ll launch, but our guess is 2024.
